The First Photo of the World

Before the 18th century, most people used camera obscura for photography. This camera is like a dull room, a sidewall has a hole to shine the light for pictures to appear on the opposite side . Tom Wedgewood (1771 – 1805) had attempted to record picture with chemical by using white paper or white leather, then moistened with solution of silver nitrate. There is no effect if kept in a dark place. But being exposed to day light, it speedily changes colour to  grey and brown. Shadow objects are write when appear on paper and the other parts are black. When you put the objects out, you get outline of objects. It is called “Profiles”. (Narong Sompong, 2539 :3)

Joseph Nicephore Niepce was the world’s first successful record picture by light during 1826 to 1827. He discovered the method of heliography by using Bitumen from Judea. (a type of asphalt discovered in Syria) He plastered on pewter plate and lighted the plate. The area that was lighted Bitumen would harden. The underexposed areas are softened and then washed in lavender oil. The photograph must be exposed for up to 8 hours to be photographed.

In the early 18th century, there was a popular simulation of solid frame or shadow, or silhouette, which is a line along the solid shadow of a crescent face or profile (Profile). The word Silhouette is named after Etienne de Silhouette, who was an amateur celebrity photographer. He was the Minister of Finance of France at that time.
